Effects Of Harmattan On Cars And How To Prevent It

Our own type of winter is here–Harmattan. This comes with dry air and dust and could have it’s own effect on vehicles. If taken for granted, this could be life threatening. Below are some important effects Harmattan can have on your car and how to get around it:

  1. Effect On The Air Filter: Many people think that Harmattan only has its effect on the exterior of the vehicle but this is wrong. The air filter suffers most during this period. When the air filter is blocked by dust, air pressure for combustion is significantly reduced and the engine is over-working and this causes high fuel consumption. Though air filter replacement is recommended for vehicles used in Nigeria after every six months, Harmattan is an exception. Replacement can be done by January ending and another just before the end of the dry season. dirty-car-air-filter
  2. Visibilty Effect: Driving through Harmattan haze is very challenging. Visibilty is nearly zero. Safety precautions is very important during this period. Always make sure to reduce your speed, make sure your headlights, fog-lights, pointer lights, brake lights and tail lights are working. When there’s need, turn on your lights to help oncoming cars to see you. fog-light
  3. Environmental Effect: Harmattan can leave dust residues on your car, this can cause visibilty and oxidating effects. It’s advisable to wash your car regularly. Car waxing isn’t a bad idea during this period also. washing-a-car
