Driver’s License: What It Is And Processes To Get One

A driver’s license is an official document permitting a specific individual to operate one or more types of motorized vehicles, such as a motorcycle, car, truck, or bus on a public road. The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has been mandated by the Federal Government of Nigeria to process and coordinate the issuance of the driver’s license since 1988, this to effectively maintain safety on Nigerian roads by issuing licenses to drivers that have been tested and seen fit to drive. Over the years the Nigerian driver’s license has been modified to cut down production of fake licenses by improving it’s security features. The processes involved in getting and renewing driver’s licenses are as follows.

Attending An Accredited Driving School

For individuals starting the process of acquiring a new driver’s license, you must first enroll into an accredited driving school. There is a list of driving schools approved by the FRSC to operate as driving institutions. You must find out if the driving school you intend to enroll with is accredited, if not your certificate after you complete your training is invalid.

VIO Testing And Inspection

After qualified individuals must have been taught and tested by driving on Nigeria roads, the driving school will then present them to the Vehicle Inspection Officer(VIO) for a driving test to ascertain if they have acquired the necessary knowledge about road signs, its use, and also the skills in driving. If the applicant passes the driving test he/she will then obtain a certificate of proficiency from the vehicle inspection officer.

Applying For A Driver’s License

After obtaining a certificate of proficiency, apply for a license at the Driver’s License Centre (DLC) followed by an online payment or making a payment at the designated bank.

Presentation Of Application Form To BIR And VIO Officers

Having reached this stage, the applicant presents his/her application form to the Nigeria Board of Internal Revenue (BIR) and the Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO) at the Driver’s License Centre for confirmation.

Biometric Capturing

Nigerian Federal Road Safety (FRSC) Officer at the Driver’s License Centre will capture the biometric data of the applicant, after which he or she will be issued a temporary driver’s license which will be valid only for sixty days.
