You may have noticed this or simply ignored it. Many Honda cars have the term “VTEC” indicated on the surface of it’s engine. This means the engine is a Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control engine, VTEC for short. Developed by Honda, it’s an electronic and mechanical system in Honda engines that allows the engine to effectively generate more horsepower.

Explaining this process in a video is Jason Fenske at Engineering Explained showing exactly how VTEC works, using real Honda engines and visual diagrams.
